Charles Elmer Hires was born in Elsinboro Pennsylvania (some say Elsinboro New Jersey) on August 19, 1851. As a son of a farmer, Charles was quite sure he did not want to spend the rest of his life toiling the soil like his father. Instead, he began experimenting with powdered roots and extracts developing medicinal syrups and tonics when he was a young man...
You can find root beer recipes and a timeline of Mr. Hires' journey to root beer fame at a posting I did titled: Mr. Hires and the Black Cow.

Pennsylvania folks come up with some great ideas. Hate the alcohol laws, so archaic, but there is nothing like a Hire's root beer, birch beer...hoagies, pretzels from a Philly street vender. Go P.A.!
I am frequently in awe of the ingenuity displayed as I stroll the Pennsylvania landscape. I can't wait to get there on a more permanent basis.
Thanks for dropping by Pierce. I'll think of you the next time I enjoy an Amish pretzel and Birch beer when I go home:)
I love root beer, especially Hires!
Your so sweet Pam, thanks for stopping...
I just read your comment on my blog. Thanks so much for dropping by. I wonder which of your blogs I should add to my bloglist. I guess I'll add this one and then I can get to your others from here.
I don't cook a lot because I'm lucky enough to have a husband who likes to. Now, mind you, he didn't cook for the first 30 years of our almost 37 year marriage when the girls were little. But, hey, he does now. He's a huge mess maker, though. But, I don't complain.
My grands live in the NE and out West and I'm in the SE so I know what you mean about them being so far away!!! It is hard!!!
Hi Julia,
I had such a nice visit @ your blog. Unfortunately, it is difficult keeping up with 3 blogs. I update the Months blog on a regular basis, the Kettledrum blog usually @ the beginning of the month and this one when ever I have the time. I added you to my Months blogroll because I think visitors there will LOVE to see what's "cooking" in your neck of the woods. Oh how I wish I could sew!!!
I don't cook that often either but I will be as soon as I make my move to PA. I'm in NY right now but hope to be moving soon. It really is terrible living so far away from the kids. I often mail boxes across to Idaho. Thank goodness they will be visiting for Thanksgiving and Tabi's 7th birthday!!!
Thanks for visiting!!!
That is something I have to try making as i've never tasted it and you can't get it here...
Cheers,
Rosa
No Root Beer in Switzerland? Let me know if you need a list of ingredients, Rosa. I'm sure I have a recipe around here somewhere. Thanks for visiting!!!
I loved Hires root beer when I was growing up. You're bringing back memories now (internal soundtrack- Barbra Streisand's "They way We Were").
Thanks for visiting Don. I sometimes take a stroll down memory lane myself when researching them. Now, I will be humming The Way We Were all night:)
